The Committee
The Golden Tree Monument Project Committee is overseeing site selection, design and fundraising.
The committee is composed of six (6) members: one (1) member from each of the three women’s families as well as one (1) representative each from the partnering organizations: Abbotsford Community Services, Progressive Intercultural Community Services and the BC Federation of Labour.
Abbotsford Community Services is the project finance lead, collecting contributions and dispensing funds to vendors. Abbotsford Community Services reports to the Committee and must seek approval for all expenditures over $500 prior to releasing funds.
Abbotsford Community Services, Progressive Intercultural Community Services and the BC Federation of Labour have all committed to working on this project as it directly supports their individual mandate to support, educate and advocate for the improvement of the living and working conditions of migrant and immigrant workers, and farm workers in particular. Each organization has worked extensively to promote the improvement of the occupational health and safety of the agricultural industry.
The Tree will be built with the generous support of donations from government, labour organizations, business, community groups and individual donations from people like you.
Spear-headed by the courageous Punia, Bal and Sidhu families, The Golden Tree is a lasting tribute that offers, not only recognition, but hope, that farmworkers will be treated with the dignity, respect and safe working conditions that they deserve.
This is a historical, first of its kind memorial to remember three mothers who were killed in a vehicle accident. The Golden Tree Monument will give farmworkers who have been neglected and abused for so long some integrity and it’ll be a reminder to the community that safety is essential for all working people and their families.
